If you are a student, you may be finding it increasingly difficult to find the Teen Summer Jobs you prefer.

The current economic climate may not only bring fewer job openings, but increased competition for popular temporary teen jobs. Don't get discouraged, as there is a place for you somewhere. You just have to know where to look faster than your competition.

As unemployment rates skyrocket even higher, more employers will not be hiring as many teens for traditional summer jobs. You will have more competition for the fewer jobs that exist, from those who are returning to the workforce because of their own economic reasons, and from returning workers who may have worked for the same employer the prior year. You may also experience increased competition from high school and college grads for the same temp jobs you seek.

Teen Jobs Search Tips

  • The higher the unemployment rate is, the more competition there will be in landing teen jobs.
  • Don't wait too late to apply for teen jobs. Apply as early as you can, to beat the crowd. Prior experience in the same industry counts, too.
  • Don't be overly choosy or picky with the jobs you discover. If you don't take a particular job, someone else probably will. Sometimes, if you turn down too many jobs, you will look back and wish you took one of them. But, then it will be too late, because the best choices will be gone, and you may have to settle for a temp job with lower pay with job duties you may not enjoy as well.
  • Remember, experience can be even more important than the paycheck. So, don't forget you are a beginner, and need the experience on your resume for future job applications. Having a work history is important, and will aid you in landing your next part time student job.
  • If you start thinking creatively, you could do anything from running errands for someone unable to drive, or prepare meals for an older citizen, become a part time baby sitter, wash cars, or be a landscaper and gardener for neighbors, etc.
  • Look for jobs where it states "No Experience Necessary." These are entry level jobs, where the only prerequisites in getting hired may be a cheerful, outgoing personality, good character, references, and a proven track record of dependability and responsibility.

The Right Attitude Can Get you into Teen Jobs

He doesn't want to have to constantly change his work schedule around to fit your needs. In other words, he wants someone there when he needs them there, without him having to take off work all the time. So, if you want to get the job and keep it, make sure you schedule doing all your personal errands, etc. on your own time, while you are off work.
