Psychometric Tests
Psychological Assessment Tests is Psychometric Tests and testing.
Psychometrics is a Science that objectively measures human behavior.
These psychological tests are made to be reliable and valid.
In order for them to be considered so, and be judged an objective psychological measurement tool, it has to meet certain criteria.
The MMPI-2® is one such test that meets this Criterion. This test is used as part of the interview process in hiring Police and other dangerous, life threatening jobs. It is also used to diagnose mental illness.
One criteria used for creating reliability and validity is what's called "Norms." The information (from the Tests) is referenced against the Norm. The individual being assessed is compared to the general population, which is representative of the norm that was taken in a Consensus of the general population at a particular point in time.
Tests like these are revised and updated from time to time, because the so called Norm is derived from a population sample. For Accurate interpretation of a Psychological Assessment Test, there needs to be some kind of Norm, or model to compare the data from the test as a sounding board.
For example, the Original MMPI was based on the 1950's Population (Norm.) People as a whole (or Society) change, and may no longer accurately reflect the general population norm in present day. When the MMPI test was updated to reflect the current Norm of the general population, it became the MMPI-2, as we know today.
Additionally, there are Objective Personality Tests that are true/false and multiple choices. Two of the Psychological Tests that relate to career personality and career match are the MMPI, and MBTI. See Career Personality Tests for the most popular Career Tests which match working personality to career fields.
There are also Projective Personality Tests like the Rorschach that uses inkblots in which the individual must describe what he sees.
Psychological Tests and Careers
Again, the Science behind Psychological Tests is called Psychometrics. Its theory centers on measuring educational and psychological areas about what a person knows, his abilities, attitudes, and personality profile. Psychometrics centers on gathering information through a psychological test or psychological assessment by questionnaires or quizzes. Below are some examples of psychological assessments or psychological assessment tests.
Some examples of Psychometric Instruments that measure Intelligence and Personality
- Stanford-Binet™ Intelligence Scale
- Again, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI™)
- And the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI®)
Applicants for jobs in Government Intelligence, Police, Firemen and similar but dangerous or even sensitive, confidential positions, are often evaluated through psychometric tests. They may be evaluated by a Psychologist through being asked questions and given various psychological assessment tests. Courts may also use a test like the MMPI to evaluate a Defendant in a trial case.
