Psychological Tests

Psychological Tests, psychological assessments, or personality tests often have to be taken by those applying for jobs in government intelligence, police, firemen and similar but dangerous, or even sensitive, confidential positions.

Job applicants may be evaluated by a psychologist through being asked questions and given various assessments or questionaires. Courts may also use a test like the MMPI to evaluate a defendant in a trial case.

One of the psychological assessments that we are interested in that relates to career aptitude, career personality, and job suitability, is the MMPI, or Minnisota Multiphasic Personality Inventory.

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2™), was created in the 1930's by Dr. Starke R. Hathaway and Psychiatrist J. C.McKinley at the University of Minnesota (Where it is copyrighted.)

This particular psychological assessment has been updated and revised a few times since the 1930's.

  • The MMPI-2 is a scientifically researched psychometric test, which has been proven to be reliable to use through the years. It has what is called scientific validity and time proven reliability.
  • It is a psychological test commonly used to diagnose and treat mental illness. Many licensed clinical psychologists and psychiatrists receive training for interpreting this test.
  • In addition, it is given to screen employees for high risk, dangerous jobs like policemen and firemen, etc.)
  • This test is for adults only, 18 years and older.
  • There are no right or wrong answers on this test.
  • Graduate level professionals with proper training and certification are the only individuals qualified to administer this type of test.
  • This test measures your personality.

There are certain careers which require this test as a step in the hiring process. Critical, lives on the line type careers, like policemen and firemen require specific personal aptitudes, personality traits, and abilities not all of us possess.

Simply stated, not everyone is cut out to work in a highly dangerous, life threatening career choice day after day. This is why the MMPI-2 psychological assessment test is often required as a hiring step for very dangerous and stressful jobs.

Knowing your capabilities and limitations can serve one well in life in general, and with matching yourself to the proper career choices for your abilities and personality. This test points out strengths and weaknesses.

Fitting the right man (or woman) to a potentially life threatening career choice is essential to the safety, happiness, and welfare of not only the individual seeking the job, but for the safety of those they will publically serve.

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory ™, or MMPI-2™ for short; To repeat, is a psychometric test which has undergone a few revisions.

It has proven and measurable testing criteria, based upon scientific research.

It is scientifically validated, and not free to take; But the price is reasonable, based upon how much reliable information you receive about yourself.

There are also, additional personality quizzes on the market, which have been researched and are reliable career personality testing instruments.

Dependable tests such as the MMPI-2, which have a long track record of reliability, have a fee because of the expenses involved in creating the test. In other words, the fees are used to pay the salaries of the research scientists and use of testing facilities.

The MMPI-2 test results is interpreted by a trained clinician. It is a psychological assessment instrument usually administered by a psychologist or psychiatrist. Your personal characteristics are compared to a group model called the "Norm." The test's administrator can make inferences about the test taker's typical pattern of behavior and preferred way of thinking, how he approaches problem solving, and much more.

Even though the MMPI-2 will reveal extensive information about each client, it is no substitute for evaluation from a mental health professional. In other words, other important aspects of a person's personality may emerge in discussion, versus from what can be evaluated through only testing questions. And, although other tests are self administered and self evaluated, the MMPI-2 is neither, and requires a professional trained to interpret the test results and reveal them to you.

In conclusion, psychological tests like the MMPI-2 are often administered as a precondition to employment to those applying for high risk occupations like, firemen and police, etc. It is also used to diagnose certain mental conditions in patients and clients. The MMPI is still used, but the MMPI-2 is the most current, updated version.
