Psychological Assessments

Psychological Assessments like the Myers Briggs® Type Indicator are psychometric tests, based upon the research and theories of Carl Jung.

This test profiles a person’s personality, and provides information about personal preferences.

There are sixteen different personality possibilities through the four sets of categories the test uses.

The categories consist of Introvert or an Extrovert, if you are a Sensing or Intuitive kind of person, Thinking or Feeling type, and more of a Judging or Perceiving personality.

  • The Extroversion and Introversion part of the test will show you if you tend to be the outgoing and more sociable extrovert, or the introspective and inward looking introvert.
  • The Sensing and Intuition part assesses you, to see if you prefer to sort how you see things through using data, or if you tend to generalize.

  • The Thinking and Feeling, demonstrates if you rely more on logical decision making, or primarily intuition.
  • Lastly, the Judging and Perceiving part of the test analyzes how you prefer to sort out your experiences.

The Myers Briggs (MBTI®) is one of the most popular psychological tests used for receiving insight into oneself. Nevertheless, be careful about basing career decisions solely upon what this test or any other career personality test results reveal about your personality and abilities.

The primary reason career personality test results cannot be relied upon forever, is that people change over time. You may acquire new skills, and change your mind about those things you value and like doing related to working. In other words, the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, is not a crystal ball, and there is no way any test can predict what kind of person you will become in the future.

Just as some of my working values and interests have changed through the years, a few of yours may also naturally change through time.
Colleges administer the career personality test to evaluate students for the type of career field, which would fit their personality type the best.

It is common for someone to change careers numerous times during their prime working years. One reason people may change careers, is because their working interests change. So, no matter what career (Including College Majors) is right for you in the beginning, you may change your mind sometime later. There are no guarantees you will find career choices you will want to be in for the rest of your life, through taking the MBTI, or any other single test.

Probably the healthiest way to use Psychological Assessments, (Besides matching oneself to a compatitible career) is to to use the test results to further your own personal development, and growth.
Knowing yourself better, can only help you in making the best possible life and career decisions. One has to be careful what he chooses to believe about what the Career Tests or psychological assessments reveal about himself. Do not pigeonhole yourself, or think you are a certain type of person, just because a test suggests it. Therefore, the better one knows himself, the better he can answer test questions and receive a more accurate career personality assessment.

There are always exceptions to the rule; Psychological assessments are not all-inclusive, and not everyone may fit into a clear personality niche. Do not forget you are unique, and you must be the ultimate judge of where it is you will fit in the world of working. Only you can know which jobs feel right for you. Through taking the MBTI, you will receive a few tips about which career areas you may fit into best.

Isabel Briggs Meyers and her mother, Katherine Cook Briggs, developed the MBTI. For more information on the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, go to CPP.Com, or Myers Briggs. Org.
