How do You know which Career Assessment is Dependable?
Each Career Assessment does not necessarily have what is called "Scientific Validity."
They are known as assessment tests, and career aptitude tests.
Not having scientific validity does not necessarily mean the test is not a good, useful tool for assessing career aptitude, and career suitability.
For your own information, check the test site credentials, and where they did their research. The material should be available on the site where you will take the test.
Any test, no matter how "Valid" it is, should not be used to literally guide your entire life by. This would be expecting far too much from any test, or even career counselor.
Think things out for your self and weigh those careers (The careers the test suggests) appropriate for you against what things you truly value in life. The test is only a guide. You need to be the final judge of which career is right for you.
Know about what the career aptitude tests are supposed to do before you take them, by knowing who they are intended for, and what they will uncover, and inventory.
Is the testing provider reliable, administering a dependable test which has a verifiable, history? Additionally, don't downplay the importance of seeking the advice of a qualified career guidance counselor, if you feel confused about your career direction.
The Counselor is usually certified by a state or national agency, and has the training and expertise in using validated assessment tools. He will know which tests have proven themselves over time, which ones have measured reliability, and can recommend the appropriate tests. He will interpret test results for you, when the test is not a self directed, self assessed test (One you can take by your self, and interpret without guidance.)
- They (Tests) are after all, only tests. And the importance should be that they take an inventory (Assessment) of all your aptitudes, skills, and talents for your own self knowledge, and as a guide to picking the most suitable career.
- A career assessment will reveal your skills and abilities; whether you are seeking your first job, or have acquired many skills through time, and wish to see which new careers your talents and aptitudes will transfer to.
- Use the information in selecting the most appropriate job that fits your personality, and abilities.
- Tests can be like a book full constructive information, about you. It is up to you how you use the information you have learned from the tests, to your best advantage.
- A career assessment test will reflect your testing input back to you through a printable read-out. Use this information in verifying things you already know about your abilities and personality, in terms of which job you'd feel the most comfortable working in.
- Again, you are the final judge about where your career path will eventually lead you. Most important, weigh everything against what you value as a sounding board in choosing the best career for the kind of person you are.
