Bored at Work? Maybe, it's time for a Change...
No one wants to be bored. But, if you are Bored at Work, this may be a sign of a job mismatch. Think back to the time you originally got the job. What attracted you to the job in the first place?
There must have been something you liked about it, or some skills you could use to transfer to another career. Was it a job that was just there at the time, so you took it because it was convenient, and easy to get into?
I don’t know of anyone who wants to do a job that is tedious, and boring. I guess it must be alright for some, but not for others. Undoubtedly, these positions have to be filled, and someone has to do them. Maybe it’s time for a job that is more interesting and challenging. This is what can bring job success and fulfillment. If you are saying to yourself, I Hate My Job! Maybe, now is the time to do something about it!
If you are Bored at Work, Set out to Find Your Job Passion
Most people desire a job they’ll love and have a passion for doing, in addition to finding deeper meaning through their employment. They want to match the job to who they are as unique individuals. I know this was especially true for me, being that I was in a profession I never had a passion for, ever. So, it was essential for me to find a second career I liked better.
To achieve this, one must match his inborn talents, skills, abilities, and personality to the right careers. It can be done; and has, for many. No one will ever become a success in his career unless he truly likes what he is doing for a living.
If there is no passion for the job we do, there is little arousal or stimulation. If your career is unsatisfying because you are using your weaker abilities, instead of your natural born stronger abilities you love using, you have yourself a problem. And, part of that problem is probably going to be, that you’ll be bored at work. Employers and co-workers notice lack of motivation, and this will usually get someone fired or laid-off, sooner or later.
Remember- Anything you hate doing, will be that much harder to learn, and more difficult to do than something you like to do. And, if that something you loathe doing happens to be a profession, that means the likelihood of you experiencing an unhappy personal or family life, is that much greater.
My own Midlife Career Change
I know I especially didn’t want to be bored again with another job, when I retired. So, I made sure I found something which I like a lot better than what I was doing before. You are seeing it right, here. But, just because someone is good at something, doesn’t necessarily mean he will like doing it every day, or should continue doing it.
I learned my old profession chiefly through on the job training, and got to be very good at it through the years. I acquired numerous related occupational skills which acted as a supplement to my core profession.
I suffered from being bored at work, but stuck it out because of the income, and retirement benefits. I would have been better off getting out of it when I was young. The longer you stay in a job, the more stuck you can get, because of financial committments. Staying in a family tradition is not something you keep, if that career does not match with who you are. It can steal your soul, and snuff out any happiness.
The Strong Interest Inventory
There are tests like the Strong® Interest Inventory, where your attitudes and interests are matched to those who like their jobs. The assumption here is that if you have similar attitudes and interests in common with people who love doing their jobs, you will also like doing their jobs. You want to work with those who are like you, and not with co-workers who you have nothing in common with. Many skills can be acquired through doing, even though natural talent and abilities are grossly lacking. You can actually develop your weaker lesser abilities; but why bother, if you do not prefer using them? If you choose a job which requires the use of your weaker skills, you will be in the same boat again. You will soon become unhappy with your new job, bored at work again, and trapped in a career which will rob you of your happiness. Related Pages- * Finding the Right Career. Top of page
